In a recent court appearance, a fraudulent individual claiming to be an American Embassy worker, self-identifying as Amelia Williams, is under investigation for allegedly defrauding Jestina Kutubu of Le100 million. The accused purportedly promised job opportunities in Australia, orchestrating a deceptive scheme to lure victims

Testimonies revealed that the accused, between December 1, 2022, and January 31, 2023, operated at the Immigration Office in Freetown. Hawa Koroma, a witness, testified that the accused convinced them of a legitimate travel program to Australia for job prospects.

Despite initial doubts raised by the witness about the program’s legality, the accused assured her, citing employment at the American Embassy. Subsequently, Le40 million was handed over with promises of the program starting within a week.

A week later, the complainant entrusted an additional Le60 million for 10 relatives after being informed of a meeting at Victoria Park. However, the promised travel never materialized, leading to the realization that they had been defrauded. The matter was reported to Hastings Police Station.

Represented by Jimmy Smith, the accused faces charges of obtaining money by false pretense.

The court confirmed the exact sum as Le100 million for 10 people involved in the travel scheme. The next hearing is scheduled for November 13, with bail still in force.
