The Attorney General, Alpha Sesay and the Chief Justice, Komba Kamanda have concluded the investigation and prosecution phase of nationwide consultations on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), following engagements with stakeholders in Makeni, Bo, and Freetown.
The consultations form part of a broader government effort to address the multifaceted nature of FGM, which spans legal, public health, child protection, cultural, gender, and human rights dimensions. Authorities say the process has been deliberately inclusive and evidence-based, aimed at informing policy direction through wide-ranging stakeholder input.
Government noted that the perspectives gathered from investigators and prosecutors represent a key contribution to the ongoing national dialogue on the issue.
As the process advances, officials confirmed that consultations will be expanded to include additional stakeholders, ensuring broader participation across the country.
While the engagement process remains ongoing, Government reiterated its commitment to protecting women and girls from violence, safeguarding children’s rights, and promoting justice, dignity, and public health.
Any future policy or legislative decisions, authorities emphasised, will be guided by evidence, informed by public views, and aligned with Sierra Leone’s constitutional and international obligations.
