Prominent businessman and politician Mohamed Omodu Kamara, widely known as Jagaban, has firmly rejected accusations that he bribed a referee to influence the outcome of a Central One Football Association (COFA) Community League match.
The match, which saw Kossoh Town eliminate Kroo Town Road from the knockout stage, was followed by deadly violence that has since led to the indefinite suspension of the football league.
Following the Saturday fixture, supporters of Kroo Town Road alleged that Jagaban manipulated the game’s result by bribing the match referee to favor Kossoh Town. In response, Jagaban’s media team strongly denied any involvement in the match officiating or the subsequent clashes.
Gibrill Saidu “Buzzom” Kamara, a spokesperson for Jagaban, stated that the businessman had no knowledge of the events and was not present. “Jagaban is a peaceful man, and his character would not allow him to do or encourage anything that has to do with violence,” the spokesperson said. He further noted that Jagaban was at home when the incident occurred on Sunday, adding that their office is generally closed on Sundays except for emergencies.
The controversy stems from Saturday’s game between Kossoh Town (also referred to as Kossoh Tong) and Kroo Town Road. Following the match, tensions escalated into a violent confrontation in the Kroo Town Road community on Sunday, September 13, 2026. The clashes reportedly resulted in the loss of three lives and the destruction of local property.
In the wake of the deadly unrest, the Western Area Football Association (WAFA) announced the immediate and indefinite suspension of the entire COFA League pending a thorough investigation. WAFA Administrative Secretary James Sanu confirmed the halt, stating that authorities will use the time to establish what happened and investigate the reported deaths.
WAFA released a statement describing the violent developments as a “serious affront to football, public order and the safety of persons and property”.
While COFA had initially postponed an upcoming match between Kossoh Tong and Fourah Bay, WAFA deemed that action “wholly insufficient” given the severity of the situation. The association declared a broader intervention, stating that no COFA fixtures will be played until formally directed by WAFA.
