Koindu Police Lead School Sensitisation on Mob Justice
Aminata Koroma The Koindu Police Division has intensified community sensitisation efforts with a session for pupils at the Free Pentecostal Primary, Junior and Senior Secondary School in the Fodadu community on the dangers and legal consequences of mob justice.
Led by Local Unit Commander Superintendent James S. Koroma, a team of police officers engaged pupils on the importance of respecting the law and avoiding actions that could lead to violence or criminal prosecution.
The officers explained that mob justice, also known as vigilante justice, occurs when people bypass the formal justice system and take punishment into their own hands against someone accused of committing an offence.
They warned that acting on rumours, panic or mistaken identity can result in innocent people being seriously injured or killed. The police also cautioned that mob attacks can involve extreme and disproportionate violence.
According to the officers, individuals who participate in mob violence may face criminal prosecution, even where they did not directly inflict an injury. They noted that participants could face serious charges, including murder and malicious damage.
The sensitisation also focused on discipline, which the officers described as the practice of following rules and standards and controlling one’s behaviour and actions in pursuit of set goals.
Pupils were encouraged to obey school rules and develop disciplined habits that could help them succeed.
The school’s Principal, Mr. Oren Tamba James, joined the call for pupils and teachers to obey the law and stay away from mob justice.
