32-Year-Old Man Urges End to Stigma, Discrimination Against Fellow Gays in Sierra Leone
Sahid Bangura 32-Year-Old Freetown resident, Philip Mohamed Karim, identified as gay, has called on community leaders, media practitioners and the public to promote respect, acceptance and equal treatment for people regardless of their sexual orientation.
Karim made the appeal while speaking about his personal experiences and the challenges faced by gay people in their communities. He said stigma and discrimination have forced many people to conceal their sexual orientation, adding that he remains open about his identity.
He urged community leaders and media practitioners to use their platforms to educate the public, challenge prejudice and discourage discriminatory treatment against gay people.
Karim said he has identified as gay since childhood and remains focused on his work and personal development. He also spoke about his personal choices, relationships and the responsibilities he expects partners to share.
Despite the challenges associated with stigma and discrimination, Karim encouraged other gay people to remain committed to their goals and personal growth.
He further appealed to the wider public to recognise gay people as human beings deserving of dignity and respect, and to reject discrimination and stigmatisation against them.
