At the end of last month, July 2022, a woman ( name protected) in the Portee community, made a proposal withe the Intention to sell her child (son) around 2 years old because she wanted to travel to ther country for greener pasture.

The plan backfired when she was unwittingly directed and taken to the Portee /Rokupa Police Post and the Kissy Police Division Family Support Unit in the East of Freetown.

Explaining the incident, a takeholder in the community, Idrissa Sesay said the young lady who stayed with his friend close to the Old Portee Wharf, along Wharf road in the community one day went to a place known a Gaza (Old Portee Wharf) close to the Sea environment and began enquiring from community members where she can get buyers, as she wanted to sell her son and travel to another country,.

Accordingly, the first person the mother of the child met could not respond to her for the sale .The Mother further went on and requested for the sale of the child to another community member.

The second person she met became suspicions of the mother’s intention and wasted no time to take the woman to the Rokupa/Portee Police Post without explaining to her where they were going. The woman thought she had got a helper and saviour to assist her for the sale.

Police investigators from the Portee/Rokupa police post were immediately sent to the scene. Reports say the woman alleged that her husband does not take care of her including her child. She appeared desperately wanting to sell the child and that she wanted to leave the child somewhere after the sale so she can leave Sierra Leone for Greener past to another country.

The OC of the Portee Police Post said they wasted no time to transfer the matter to the Kissy Police Division, FSU Unit in the East of Freetown. After interrogations the child was separated from the mother.

The child was handed over to the Father including other relatives who came to the FSU Unit. At the end, the mother did not reveal the selling price of the child demanded for the sale.
