Abu Bakarr Sankoh, a porter at ferry junction, Kissy in Freetown has been sentenced to six months imprisonment by presiding Judge, Monfred Sesay after he was convicted of stealing.

Sankoh was standing trial for conspiracy to commit larceny before presiding Judge Monfred Sesay at the law court building in Freetown on Wednesday 1st February 2023.

The convict was accused of stealing one Infinix Hot 10 mobile phone and one Apple I-phone 8plus valued at eleven million old leones (Le11,000,000), which are the properties of one Mustapha Sesay Sankoh.

According to state counsel, on the 27th of May 2022 the complainant, the accused, and others were at the Kissy ferry terminal where the complainant was with his bag trying to board the ferry.

He stated that the accused offered to assist the victim by carrying his bag and in the process unzipped the bag of the victim and stole the two phones which he handed over to his accomplices and went away, but was later identified to the police by a lady selling goods at the terminal.

The accused plea for mercy, stating that he has no relative in Freetown and has a two-year-old daughter whose survival depends on him.

Defense Lawyer pleaded for mercy and said the accused is a first-time offender of the law and has already spent seven months in remand, which he said is enough to learn his lesson and called on the presiding Judge to discharge the accused so that he can return to the society and do something productive with his life.

Justice Monfred Sesay, in his ruling told the accused that he should have stayed with his relatives in the province or better continue with his porter job, which he said is a profitable business.

The judge said pardoning him is letting him back into society to continue his bad deeds and was sentenced to six months imprisonment.
