UNICEF Representative Mariko Kagoshima has led a team on a visit to Moyamba District, where they engaged with education and healthcare providers to assess services supporting children, women and families in the community.
As part of the visit, the UNICEF team visited the Mafombo Early Childhood Education Centre, where they interacted with facilitators and children and observed the learning environment.
The engagement provided an opportunity for the team to learn about the experiences of young children and facilitators, as well as the support needed to strengthen early childhood education and provide children with a strong foundation for learning and development.
The team also visited the Moyamba Junction Community Health Centre, where they engaged with healthcare providers, including Community Health Workers, to better understand the services being delivered to children, women and families in the community.
The discussions focused on the role of frontline health workers and the challenges and support needed to strengthen community-based health services.
The visit formed part of UNICEF’s engagement with local actors working to improve services for children and families, providing an opportunity to listen to community-level experiences, identify areas requiring support and explore ways of strengthening partnerships in Moyamba District.
From early childhood education to community health, UNICEF’s engagement highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts to improve the wellbeing and development of children and strengthen support systems for families.
