In a move aimed at promoting girl-child education and supporting the Government of Sierra Leone’s Free Quality Education initiative, Councillor Alicious M. Zoker has provided learning materials to 20 vulnerable girls in the Sulima community, Massaquoi Two Section, Sorogbema Chiefdom, Pujehun District.

The gesture is intended to ease some of the educational challenges faced by vulnerable pupils and encourage them to remain in school despite the financial difficulties confronting their families.
The beneficiaries were drawn from three educational institutions in the community: RC Primary School, Sulima Primary School, and Sulima Junior Secondary School.

The selected pupils include those in Primary Five and Six, as well as students from Junior Secondary School to Senior Secondary School.

The learning materials presented included school bags, books, shoes, and pens, all of which are essential for pupils to participate effectively in classroom activities and pursue their studies with greater confidence.

Speaking on the motivation behind the initiative, Councillor Zoker said the support was intended to encourage vulnerable pupils to take their education seriously and remain committed to their academic pursuits.

He emphasised the importance of supporting children who face financial challenges at home, noting that such difficulties should not prevent them from accessing education and working towards a better future.

The councillor’s intervention is expected to provide relief to the beneficiaries and their families, particularly at a time when the cost of meeting basic educational needs continues to pose a challenge for many households.

One of the beneficiaries, Jenneh kamassa expressed happiness and appreciation for the support, describing it as a blessing in disguise.
She explained that since the beginning of the new academic year, she had been worried about how she would return to school because her parents had been unable to purchase the necessary school materials for her.

According to her, the donation has brought renewed hope and relief, as it will help her overcome some of the challenges that threatened her ability to begin the academic year properly.

She expressed gratitude to Councillor Zoker for remembering vulnerable pupils in the community and providing assistance at a time when she needed it most.
Her experience reflects the difficulties some schoolchildren face when their families are unable lto afford basic educational supplies, even when the children are willing and eager to learn.

Keifala Kemokai, a parent commended Councillor Alicious M. Zoker for what he described as a timely and commendable initiative.
He noted that the provision of learning materials would help reduce the burden on parents and guardians while encouraging the beneficiaries to concentrate on their education.

The parent expressed optimism that the intervention would yield positive results if the pupils made good use of the materials provided and remained dedicated to their studies.
He also urged the beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity, reminding them that the cost of living and the difficulty of obtaining money had made it increasingly challenging for many parents to meet their children’s educational needs.

Kemokai encouraged the pupils to demonstrate seriousness, discipline, and commitment to their studies so that the support would contribute meaningfully to their academic development.

Promoting Access to Education
The donation highlights the important role community leaders and local representatives can play in complementing national efforts to improve access to education, particularly for children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.

Although the Free Quality Education initiative has helped expand access to schooling in Sierra Leone, some families continue to struggle to provide school uniforms, shoes, books, writing materials, and other basic necessities for their children.
For vulnerable girls, such challenges can affect regular school attendance, participation in classroom activities, and their ability to progress academically.

Councillor Zoker’s support for the 20 girls in Sulima therefore represents a practical effort to address some of these challenges at the community level.

The initiative also underscores the need for continued collaboration among local authorities, school administrators, parents, community stakeholders, and development partners to ensure that children are not left behind because of their families’ financial circumstances.
