The Sierra Leone Under-19 Men’s Cricket Team has departed for Kigali, Rwanda, to participate in the 2026 ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Africa Division 2 Qualifier, where the Junior Men’s Patriots will be aiming to secure promotion.
The team heads into the tournament with confidence, boasting an even head-to-head record against two of their main rivals, Ghana and hosts Rwanda. Sierra Leone has won one and lost one official Under-19 international against each of the two sides.
The Junior Patriots will begin their campaign on Sunday, 9 August, with a crucial opening match against Ghana. The two West African nations first met during the 2013 ICC Africa Under-19 Championship Division 2, where Ghana emerged victorious. However, Sierra Leone levelled the rivalry with a win in the 2018 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup Africa Division 2 Qualifier, leaving both sides tied with one victory each.
Sierra Leone also shares an identical record with Rwanda. The Junior Patriots lost their first meeting against the hosts in the 2013 ICC Africa Under-19 Championship Division 2 before bouncing back to defeat them in the 2019 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup Africa Qualifier.
The upcoming clash with Ghana presents an opportunity for Sierra Leone to gain its first-ever winning head-to-head record over its West African rivals at Under-19 level while boosting its chances of securing promotion in the tournament.
The Junior Men’s Patriots will be hoping to make a strong impression in Kigali as they pursue qualification for the next stage of the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.
