The All Peoples Congress Party APC has rejected the president’s appointed Western Region Electoral Commissioner.

President Julius Maada Bio on July 6, 2021, appointed Zainab Umu Moseray as the Western Region Electoral Commissioner.

APC party on Thursday, July 15, 2021, in a press release, cautioned the President that it was through consultation with the leaders of all registered political parties and subject to the approval of Parliament that he should appoint an electoral commissioner.

The release reads as follows;

APPOINTMENT AS ELECTORAL COMMISSIONER (WESTERN REGION)

I wish to acknowledge receipt of a letter from the Office of the President today 15th July 2021 dated 6th July 2021, signed by one Kenei Lamin on the above subject matter.

The appointment of an Electoral Commissioner, Western Region by His Excellency Rtd. Brigadier Julius Maada Bio is made pursuant to Section 32(3) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone Act No. 6 of 1991, Section 32(4) subsection 3 of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, and Section 32 (3) states:

The members of the Electoral Commission shall be appointed by the President after consultation with the leaders of all registered political parties and subject to the approval of Parliament.

However, the letter dated 6th July 2021 issued by the Office of the President informing the All Peoples Congress (APC) Party of the appointment of Mrs. Zainab Umu Moseray as Electoral Commissioner, Western Region. This is at variance with the Constitutional provision quoted above.
