The Sierra Leone National Bakers Union and the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Dr Sao-Kpato Hannah Isatta Macarthy, have opened discussions on sanitary inspections, authorised inspector lists, and annual dues for bakeries across the country.

During the engagement, the union raised several concerns, which Minister Macarthy acknowledged, assuring members that the issues would be reviewed by the ministry.

She emphasised that annual sanitary inspections remain essential and should support the yearly renewal of registration certificates issued after assessments conducted by ministry officials.

Minister Macarthy also highlighted the importance of maintaining clean working environments and providing adequate washing facilities, noting that such standards are critical for protecting public health and ensuring safer bakery operations.

Additionally, she stated that the ministry would provide the union with official licence rates and a list of authorised sanitary inspectors to prevent impersonation, reduce exploitation, and eliminate confusion among bakery operators.

Meanwhile, the President of the Sierra Leone National Bakers Union, Chief Alhaji Amadu Jorgo Barrie, reaffirmed the union’s commitment to complying with government regulations and ensuring that members register with the relevant institutions.

He expressed concerns over repeated visits by individuals claiming to be government officials who allegedly demand money from bakery operators.

Both parties concluded the engagement by reaffirming their commitment to reaching a clearer agreement on annual dues, inspection procedures, and strengthening cooperation between the ministry and bakery operators nationwide.
