Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio and the first lady, Fatima Maada Bio have arrived Sierra Leone through the Lungi airport on Thursday.

The duo had departed Sierra Leone for a private visit to London, United Kingdom on Thursday, July 28, 2022 just 24 hours after the controversial sacking of the former Inspector general of police, Ambrose Sovula.

Their arrival comes in the wake of violent protests that rocked Freetown and other parts of Sierra Leone on Wednesday.

In the last three days that the President Bio had been out of the country there have been anti government protests in Freetown and the South, leading to the death of unspecified number of people, and the killing of at least two policemen on Wednesday.

Vice President Juldeh Jalloh handled the situation while President Bio was out of the country. After obviously consulting the president, he has called on the military to assist the police to restore order in the capital, through a process called MACP (Military Assistance to Civil Power).

The Vice President also announced a nationwide curfew started at 3:00 pm on Wednesday in a bid to restore law and order in the country.

Reacting to the unfortunate events on social media, President Bio noted that what happened will be fully investigated, and urged citizens to remain calm.

“As a government, we have the responsibility to protect every citizen of Sierra Leone. What happened today was unfortunate and will be fully investigated. I urge all Sierra Leoneans to be calm” President Bio wrote.
