Sierra Leone Calls for Debt Cancellation at G77 Ministerial Meeting
Aaron Parker Sierra Leone has called for debt cancellation for developing countries as the country joined other nations at the 50th Annual Meeting of Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Group of 77 and China in New York.
Representing Sierra Leone at the high-level meeting on Friday, 25 September 2026, Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Umaru Napoleon Koroma, highlighted the importance of stronger international cooperation in addressing the financial challenges confronting developing countries.
A key position presented by Sierra Leone was a call for debt cancellation, reflecting the country’s broader advocacy for greater fiscal space for developing nations to finance socioeconomic development.
Sierra Leone also called for reforms to the global financial architecture, particularly measures that would improve developing countries’ access to Special Drawing Rights (SDRs).
The country further advocated for the establishment of a fairer global tax system, positioning these reforms as important elements in creating a more equitable international economic system and supporting the development needs of countries in the Global South.
The 50th G77 and China ministerial meeting provided a platform for Sierra Leone to reaffirm its support for stronger multilateral cooperation and reforms aimed at addressing structural challenges affecting developing economies.
Koroma’s participation formed part of Sierra Leone’s wider engagements during the United Nations General Assembly week in New York, where the country continued to advance its positions on international cooperation, development financing and global economic reform.
