Pathologist, Dr Owizz Performs Autopsy on Newborn Reportedly Killed by Police Teargas
Sia Lucy Kannah Pathologist and former Chief Medical Examiner, Dr Simeon Owizz Koroma conducted an autopsy on a two-day-old baby who allegedly died after being exposed to teargas fired by police forces on Saturday, 4th October 2025, in Kuntorloh, Freetown.
The baby’s family claims the teargas caused the infant’s death, prompting widespread calls for an investigation. The Sierra Leone Police have ordered the exhumation of the baby’s body for a forensic examination to determine the cause of death. The investigation’s findings are expected to reveal whether the teargas was indeed the cause of death.
Autopsies are medical procedures performed to determine the cause of death, examine injuries, and gather medical and forensic information. They can be conducted with or without the consent of the next of kin, depending on the circumstances surrounding the death.
Furthermore, the autopsy report will provide crucial evidence in determining the cause of death and whether the teargas was responsible.
This investigation aims to bring clarity and justice to the situation, addressing the concerns of the family and the community.
According to the government pathologist and former Chief Medical Examiner for Sierra Leone, by Monday, 13th October 2025, the result will be made public.
