The Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) has disclosed that the country’s next general elections will be held in 2028, with October 12, 2028, being the latest possible date for the polls.
Albert Massaquoi, Director of External Relations at the ECSL, made the disclosure while speaking on AYV’s Wake Up Sierra Leone, providing a clear indication of the Commission’s expected timeline for the next electoral cycle.
Massaquoi said the ECSL is already preparing for the elections as part of its broader strategic planning and responsibility for managing the country’s electoral processes.
He also disclosed that the Commission is reviewing provisions of the Public Elections Act that are frequently misunderstood or misinterpreted by members of the public.
“We have identified that certain provisions of the Public Elections Act are frequently misinterpreted by the public. Accordingly, we are conducting a review of these provisions to determine appropriate improvements,” Massaquoi said.
According to him, the review is intended to strengthen the electoral framework and improve public understanding of election-related laws ahead of future polls.
Massaquoi further outlined the ECSL’s strategic plan, which focuses on institutional and staff development, electoral education, communication and participation, electoral operations, and ICT and data management systems.
The disclosure places October 12, 2028, as a key deadline on Sierra Leone’s electoral calendar, with preparations expected to continue across the Commission’s operational, institutional and legal areas ahead of the next general elections.
