ECSL Moves to Introduce Electoral and Political Education in Universities
Aaron Parker The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), in collaboration with the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) and the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, has engaged the Tertiary Education Commission and representatives from 12 universities to finalise a draft curriculum for integrating electoral and political education into university education.
The technical working group engagement, held at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown, forms part of efforts to implement Recommendation 13 of the Cross-Party Tripartite Recommendations, which calls for the integration of electoral and political education into Sierra Leone’s education system.
The initiative is aimed at equipping students with greater knowledge and understanding of electoral processes, democratic governance and political participation.
Through the collaboration, stakeholders are working to develop a curriculum that will strengthen civic awareness and promote informed and responsible participation among young people and future leaders.
The ECSL said the initiative reflects its commitment to deepening civic and electoral knowledge among young people while contributing to the strengthening of democratic participation and governance in Sierra Leone.
The engagement brings together key stakeholders in the education and electoral sectors to ensure that the proposed curriculum is relevant, comprehensive and suitable for integration into tertiary education institutions across the country.
