The Deputy Public Education Officer for The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) Kadiatu Turay has explained some of the reasons why EDSA is effecting an electricity tariff adjustment in the country.

She maintained that, EDSA is not generating power but they are buying it also from the independent power providers who are selling to them in USDollars, adding that, as the rate for the USD is rising they are challenged.

She said as of July 2022 when the SLEWRC asked EDSA to sell at 16cent to consumers the price of the USD was at 11leones but now it stands at 22 Leones and that has caused EDSA to lose a lot of money just to ensure that light is available for the citizens.

“With all these and of the fact that, the government is spending a lot on other areas in the country, we at EDSA have decided to make a little adjustment in the tariff so that we can be able to provide uninterrupted electricity for the people of this country” she stated.

She maintained that, the people don’t need to be very worried about the tariff as it has to be in their advantage.

Alfred Kaima, The Head of Economic Regulation at The Sierra Leone Electricity and Water Regulatory Commission (SLEWRC) maintained that, the energy cost is very expensive currently and EDSA has got no other option but to adjust the tariff to ensure power is available.

He confirmed that EDSA has applied for adjustment of tariff and they will look into it and go through due process in ensuring that, the public is aware of the adjustment, adding that, the adjustment asked of by EDSA is still subjected to review as they have several processes to be considered before it can be approved.
