The New Electoral Commissioner for Northern Region, Abubakar Mahmoud Koroma, has subscribed to the oath of office before His Excellency President Dr Julius Maada Bio, during a short ceremony where he committed to the integrity of his office.

Section 32 (3) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, Act No 6 of 1991 provides for a member of the Electoral Commission, before assuming the function of his or duty, to take and subscribe before the President to the oath as set out in the Third Schedule of the same Constitution.

Commissioner Koroma thanked President Bio for the confidence reposed in him to serve the country in such a distinguished position, adding that he felt the honour and privilege of a lifetime that he would work very hard to protect.

“I am honoured to serve and work with the Chief Electoral Commission, Mohamed Kenewui Konneh, who is already making a positive impact in that institution. I will work to promote electoral integrity, to meet the essential criteria of an inclusive, accountable, and transparent election. I will work to promote a peaceful election in this country. Thank you very much, Your Excellency,” he concluded.

In a brief statement, President Bio congratulated Commissioner Koroma on his new national assignment, saying that the Commissioners of NEC were very special people who would determine the fate of politicians. He, therefore, admonished him and other commissioners present to promote a credible election that would stand the test of time.

“You are joining a very mature team of commissioners. I wish you the best and hope that you can effectively perform the task that is before you. Thank you very much,” President Bio concluded.
