First Lady of Sierra Leone, Fatima Bio, has been recognised by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for her outstanding leadership and dedicated service to the African continent.
The prestigious recognition was presented during the Global Catalyst Summit, highlighting her ongoing commitment to social impact, women’s empowerment, and community development.
Expressing her gratitude for the honour, First Lady Fatima Maada Bio dedicated the award to the people of Africa, emphasising that the accolade reflects collective effort and resilience across the continent.
“This recognition is not mine alone. I accept it on behalf of the women, girls, young people, and communities across Africa whose courage, resilience, and hopes continue to inspire my work,” she stated.
Acknowledging the global influence of both Ivy League institutions, she described being welcomed by Harvard and MIT as “both a privilege and a responsibility”. She reiterated her commitment to fostering stronger ties between African initiatives and international academic centres, particularly in key sectors such as women’s health, education, and youth opportunities.
“I believe that meaningful collaboration with Africa is essential to shaping a healthier, more equitable global future,” she added, thanking the summit organisers for providing a vital platform to showcase African leadership, innovation, and solutions.
The award marks another milestone in the First Lady’s international advocacy efforts to promote gender equality, enhance educational access, and strengthen healthcare infrastructure across Africa.
