The National Fire Force has responded to and extinguished 375 fire incidents across Sierra Leone between January 1 and August 31, 2026, highlighting the scale of fire emergencies confronting the country.
The figures were disclosed by Bintu Fatmata Kamara Esq., PRO/Legal Officer of the National Fire Force, during the government weekly press conference held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, while speaking on the Force’s operations and recent developments.
According to Kamara, the Western Area accounted for the highest number of reported incidents, with 249 cases, followed by the Eastern Region with 57, the Southern Region with 38, and the Northern Region with 30.
She noted that some of the major incidents recorded during the period occurred at locations including ECOWAS, SMBC, the Library Board and in Makeni.
Beyond firefighting, Kamara said the Fire Force also undertakes search-and-rescue operations during emergencies, including incidents involving wells and water-related accidents.
She disclosed that the Force conducted 10 rescue operations during the period under review, eight of which involved water-well incidents.
The operations, she said, resulted in two lives being saved, while the bodies of other victims were recovered.
Kamara further highlighted the Force’s preventive interventions, saying it is targeting 250 schools nationwide with fire-safety education and has already conducted sensitisation activities in 58 communities.
She said public education remains critical because many fire incidents can be prevented when people understand basic fire-safety measures and respond appropriately to potential hazards.
The Fire Force is also urging the public and media to help popularise its emergency contact numbers to ensure that residents can quickly reach firefighters during emergencies.
