Freetown Residents Face Fines for Using Unapproved Waste Disposal Methods
Residents and business owners in Freetown could face legal fines for failing to comply with city sanitation regulations requiring the use of waste collection services approved by the Freetown City Council (FCC).
Mayor of Freetown Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has reminded residents that using an FCC-approved waste service provider is mandatory under the city’s sanitation regulations, warning that non-compliance constitutes a violation of the law.
Her warning comes amid growing concerns over household waste being left in uncollected piles across various parts of the city, a practice she described as an improper method of waste disposal.
Aki-Sawyerr urged homeowners and business operators to register their properties with an FCC-approved waste service provider, emphasising that keeping Freetown clean and healthy requires collective responsibility.
She said registration can be completed by calling 8244, from Monday to Saturday, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
The Mayor further encouraged residents and business owners to cooperate with city authorities by ensuring proper waste collection and disposal, as part of broader efforts to improve sanitation and maintain a clean, safe and sustainable municipality.
