The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Health, has unveiled essential medicines and reproductive health commodities valued at US$2 million for distribution to health facilities across the country.
The supplies, currently stored at the National Medical Supplies Agency (NMSA), are expected to be dispatched nationwide to support the delivery of critical maternal and child health services.
The commodities include medicines and reproductive health supplies needed to manage complications associated with Caesarean sections, normal deliveries and other health emergencies.
Health Minister Austin Demby, PhD, MPH, said the investment demonstrates the Government’s continued commitment to protecting essential health services for women, children and families across Sierra Leone.
The intervention comes as the country continues to implement the 300 Days of Activism for Triple Zero, an initiative aimed at reducing preventable maternal and child deaths.
According to the Ministry of Health, high blood pressure, malaria, postpartum bleeding and sepsis or other infections remain among the leading causes of maternal and child deaths. The newly procured medicines and supplies are intended to strengthen the health system’s capacity to respond to these conditions.
The Government also says the distribution of the commodities will be closely monitored from NMSA stores to health facilities as part of measures to strengthen accountability and prevent potential misuse or diversion.
The nationwide distribution is expected to enhance the availability of essential medicines and reproductive health commodities and support healthcare workers in providing timely and effective care to mothers and children.
