Sierra Leone’s former Attorney-general and Minister of Justice who doubles as a key member of the main opposition All Peoples Congress Party APC, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara has given a contrary view to the publication made by the Government of Sierra Leone with regards the celebration of the 63rd independence anniversary for this year.

It can be recalled that, on the 22nd April, 2024, the Government of Sierra Leone through the Office of the President released a memo on the this year’s independence anniversary celebration.

According to the release titled ” 63rd independence anniversary”, signed by the secretary to the president, Julius F. Sandy it maintained that, the celebration will be commemorated thus;

Friday 26th April, 2024, Prayers in all Mosques across the country, Saturday 27th April, 2024 inter-faith service at State House and on Sunday 28th April, 2024, Prayers in all Churches across the country.

Responding to the aforementioned, Kamara stated that directing MDA’s to commemorate Independence with prayers in mosques and churches, is in collusion with freedom of religion (Constitution (s. 24(1).

Hence Govt cannot dictate when, how, or in what faith, people should pray. Let them carry their own load and seek self penance” he maintained.
