JFK Denies Supporting SLPP’s Berewa in 2007, Says Professional Ties Never Translated to Political Backing
Ben Bassey APC flagbearer aspirant Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara (JFK ) has firmly denied claims that he supported or campaigned for former Sierra Leone People’s Party flagbearer Solomon Berewa during the 2007 presidential election.
Kamara made the remarks during an interview on AYV’s State of the Nation programme. He acknowledged that he was professionally close to Berewa, who was his boss and mentor during his time at the law office, but insisted their relationship never translated into political support.
“I was close to him, sufficiently close when he was my boss, and I learned a lot from him as my mentor. But that should not mean I should come and deny him or disown him in public,” Kamara said.
However, when directly asked whether that relationship translated into political support for Berewa, Kamara was unequivocal: “Not at all. Not at all. I was never a member of the support group, and that never translated into political support for him.”
Kamara’s denial is significant given the political history of the 2007 presidential election, when Berewa represented the ruling SLPP, and Ernest Bai Koroma represented the opposition APC. During that election, Koroma defeated Berewa in a runoff, marking the first peaceful transfer of power from the SLPP to the APC since the end of the civil war.
Kamara’s comments come as he seeks to position himself as a contender for the APC’s flagbearership ahead of the 2028 presidential election. He has also used the interview to defend his record in public service, his remuneration while serving as Anti-Corruption Commissioner and Attorney General, and his views on constitutionalism, democracy and the rule of law.
The former Attorney General and Minister of Justice also recalled his relationship with former President Ernest Bai Koroma, describing him as a former boss and mentor while distinguishing professional relationships from political allegiance.
So what? If JFK supported Berewa, is he not a Sierra Leonean. Does that disqualify him for APC flagship? Wow, Sierra Leone politics. Mr. Magai didn’t support APC party from other party and APC stayed in power. In Canada members of parliament crossed floor to party they like. Period. They go to the polls when it comes to voting.
