President Julius Maada Bio is expected to serve as the guest speaker at the opening ceremony of the 2026 National Council of Paramount Chiefs Conference, which will be held in Bo from July 30 to August 1.
The annual conference will bring together Paramount Chiefs from all 16 districts of Sierra Leone to deliberate on issues affecting traditional governance, national development and community security.
Organisers said this year’s conference will be held under the theme, “Strengthening Chieftaincy for National Security and Governance,” highlighting the important role of traditional leaders in promoting peace, preserving cultural heritage, resolving community disputes and supporting effective governance across the country.
President Bio’s keynote address is expected to set the tone for discussions on strengthening the institution of chieftaincy and enhancing collaboration between traditional authorities, government and other stakeholders in advancing national development.
The conference will provide Paramount Chiefs with an opportunity to exchange experiences, assess challenges confronting the chieftaincy institution and explore practical strategies for improving its contribution to governance, national unity and sustainable development.
Participants are also expected to examine ways of reinforcing the partnership between traditional authorities and state institutions in addressing issues affecting local communities and improving grassroots governance.
As custodians of Sierra Leone’s customs, traditions and communal lands, Paramount Chiefs continue to play a central role in maintaining peace, promoting social cohesion and supporting development initiatives across the country.
The conference is expected to conclude with resolutions aimed at strengthening the role of the National Council of Paramount Chiefs in supporting national security, good governance and community development.
