MP Mariama Zombo Honoured Among Sierra Leone’s 50 Most Influential Women
Member of Parliament Mariama Zombo has been recognised among Sierra Leone’s 50 Most Influential Women, highlighting her work on legislation, women’s empowerment and child protection.
Zombo, who represents Pujehun District in Parliament, received the recognition at the Bintumani Conference Centre in Freetown, according to the information provided for the award. Parliament’s official profile confirms that she represents Pujehun District and serves on the Gender and Children’s Affairs and Human Rights committees.
The lawmaker said the recognition carries a responsibility beyond personal achievement and called it a renewed commitment to public service.
“This honour is not something I take for granted. It’s a call to duty beyond my current aspirations. It’s a reminder to give everything to service. In the midst of my trials and joys, I pulled through and got recognised. Thanks be to God for His mercies and guidance.”
Zombo dedicated the award to Mama Haja Miniatu Konneh, whom she credited with shaping her values and personal journey.
Her legislative record includes a leading role in the passage of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2024. Parliamentary records show that Zombo moved the motion for the Bill to be read for a second time during debate in June 2024.
The legislation was subsequently enacted to prohibit child marriage and provide protections for victims. Contemporary reports identified Zombo as the MP who piloted the private member’s Bill.
Beyond child marriage legislation, Zombo has used her parliamentary platform to advocate for stronger protections for women and children and greater participation of women in political leadership.
Parliament lists her as the public relations officer for the Parliamentary Female Caucus and as a member of the Gender and Children’s Affairs, Environment and Climate Change, and Human Rights committees.
She has also advocated for greater gender representation in political institutions, including stronger financial support for female politicians and measures to increase women’s representation in Parliament.
Her recognition comes against the backdrop of her broader advocacy on gender equality and child protection, areas that have featured prominently in her parliamentary work.
For Zombo, the honour is therefore both recognition of her public service and a call to continue advocating for women, children and more inclusive political participation in Sierra Leone.
