The Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs (MLGCA), in collaboration with the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), has concluded a stakeholders’ engagement in Jaluahun Chiefdom, Kailahun District, on Monday, 18th May 2026.
The meeting focused on verifying Chiefdom Councillors and addressing long-standing governance issues affecting Paramount Chieftaincy elections.
MLGCA Permanent Secretary Prince Alex Sorieba emphasized that the verification exercise will tackle bottlenecks in local elections and find lasting, amicable solutions.

Key Highlights were that active military personnel cannot contest presidential or parliamentary elections while serving. However, they are legally permitted to contest Paramount Chieftaincy elections.
Selection of Tribal Authorities – The sole responsibility for choosing Tribal Authorities rests with Town Chiefs, not Section Chiefs.
Furthermore, ECSL will soon engage stakeholders regarding upcoming electoral activities. The government aims to conduct all pending Paramount Chieftaincy elections as soon as possible.
Finally, the Ministry views the engagement as a major step toward restoring clarity, order, and trust in Kailahun’s chieftaincy structures. Local authorities, traditional leaders, and residents of Jaluahun Chiefdom are urged to cooperate fully with the verification and electoral processes.
