The Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Freetown hosted a high-level reception on July 31, 2026, to commemorate the 27th anniversary of His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s accession to the throne, bringing together senior government officials, diplomats, and dignitaries in a renewed demonstration of the growing strategic partnership between Morocco and Sierra Leone.
Speaking at the event, the Chargé d’Affaires and Head of Mission, Khalid Akhsas, praised King Mohammed VI’s leadership, highlighting Morocco’s transformation into a modern and resilient economy driven by investments in infrastructure, renewable energy, industrial development, and social progress. He described Morocco as a committed partner in Africa’s development, promoting peace, stability, and shared prosperity across the continent.
The event also highlighted Sierra Leone’s recent hosting of the ECOWAS Summit in Freetown, where regional leaders endorsed the Africa-Atlantic Gas Pipeline and signed the Intergovernmental Agreement. The project, initiated under the leadership of King Mohammed VI in partnership with Nigeria, is expected to enhance regional energy security, deepen economic integration, and support sustainable development across West Africa.
Akhsas commended Sierra Leone for its role in facilitating the landmark agreement. Also, they noted the inauguration of the Julius Maada Bio Conference Centre as a symbol of the country’s commitment to regional cooperation and diplomatic engagement.
Bilateral relations between the two countries were described as steadily advancing, with both sides recently convening a follow-up meeting in Freetown to assess progress on thirteen cooperation agreements signed in Dakhla in 2023. Under the “From Vision to Delivery” framework, the partnership focuses on delivering tangible outcomes across sectors, including agriculture, energy, education, health, tourism, infrastructure, and digital transformation.
The Moroccan envoy further noted that the relationship is strengthened through continuous high-level exchanges, technical collaboration, scholarship opportunities, and cultural initiatives. He expressed appreciation for Sierra Leone’s consistent support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the Autonomy Initiative, describing it as a reflection of the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations.
Representing the Government of Sierra Leone, Acting Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Franklyn Brima Fawundu, conveyed congratulations to King Mohammed VI and reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation. He highlighted ongoing initiatives such as community police cooperation and the Joint Conventional Commission as examples of the growing partnership anchored in mutual trust and shared objectives.
Fawundu reiterated Sierra Leone’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, underscoring the enduring friendship and strategic alignment between the two countries as they continue to collaborate on regional and continental priorities.
