National Peace Walk Unites All 16 Districts in Nationwide Call for Unity

Thousands of citizens across all 16 districts of Sierra Leone took part in the National Peace Walk 2026, turning a nationwide mobilisation into a public call for unity, peace, and national cohesion.

From Freetown to Bo, Kenema, Makeni, Kono, Moyamba, Bonthe, and the North-West, communities joined the coordinated event, with participants wearing white shirts as a symbol of neutrality and shared commitment to peace.

Organisers described the initiative as a countrywide movement rather than a single-city event, with simultaneous activities held across districts, including street processions, community gatherings, and closing ceremonies in major centres.

In Bo, participants gathered at Coronation Field and marched through Mahei Boima Road, where organisers urged residents to actively participate and reject division. Similar scenes were reported in Kenema, Makeni, Kono, and other districts, where residents walked under the message that peace requires collective action.

Despite rainfall in parts of Freetown, participants continued the march, with activities coordinated around areas including Congo Cross and Kallon Car Park, where the national closing ceremony was later held near Lumley Beach. Officials said the turnout reflected a strong public commitment to unity regardless of weather conditions.

In the eastern, northern, and north-western regions, communities also joined the walk in large numbers, adding their voices to what organisers described as a nationwide expression of solidarity. In Bonthe and Moyamba, residents participated in colourful street processions and community events reinforcing the peace message.

Organisers said the Peace Walk was designed to move beyond speeches, encouraging citizens and leaders to demonstrate unity through action. They emphasised that peace must be practised daily across homes, communities, and institutions.

At the national closing ceremony in Freetown, participants gathered for music, performances, and messages reinforcing the theme of unity, as officials urged citizens to sustain the momentum beyond the event.

The Peace Walk concluded with renewed calls for continued national cohesion, with organizers stressing that peace remains a shared responsibility across all regions and communities.

We want to see former president and the present president take the lead on a peace tour across the country.
