The National Protected Area Authority (NPAA), with support from the European Union (EU) and the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) Budgetary Support Programme, has commenced a workshop on the Integrated Management Effectiveness Tool (IMET) to evaluate the performance of five protected areas across Sierra Leone.
The workshop, which started on Thursday, 16th July 2026, is being held at the Bombali District Council Hall in Makeni and focuses on assessing the effectiveness of management practices in the Western Area Peninsula National Park, Gola Rainforest National Park, Outamba-Kilimi National Park, Loma Mountains National Park, and Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary.
IMET is an internationally recognised tool used to measure the effectiveness of protected area management. It allows conservation managers and stakeholders to assess progress, identify challenges, and develop strategies aimed at improving biodiversity conservation efforts.
The exercise seeks to determine the current management status of the five protected areas and establish whether improvements or changes have been recorded since the previous assessment.
Findings from the workshop are expected to support efforts to strengthen the conservation and management of Sierra Leone’s protected areas while contributing to national and global biodiversity conservation commitments.
