The National Revenue Authority (NRA) has commenced the nationwide distribution of new Smart Goods and Services Tax (GST) machines as part of efforts to strengthen tax collection, improve compliance and enhance transparency in business transactions across Sierra Leone.

The rollout targets 10,000 GST-registered businesses nationwide and is designed to complement the existing Electronic Cash Register system. The new machines are expected to improve the electronic recording of taxable transactions, strengthen record-keeping and help reduce revenue leakages.

Speaking during the distribution and sensitisation exercise, NRA Commissioner General Abu Martin Kanneh described the initiative as an important component of the Authority’s ongoing domestic revenue mobilisation efforts.

Kanneh said the Smart GST machines would provide benefits to both businesses and Government by promoting accurate transaction records, improving compliance and strengthening customer confidence in the tax system.

“The Smart GST machines will benefit businesses and the Government by promoting accurate record-keeping, strengthening compliance and building customer confidence,” he stated.

The Commissioner General also called on journalists and other media practitioners to support public awareness of the initiative and encourage consumers to request valid GST receipts whenever they make taxable purchases.

According to the NRA, its officials are currently engaging business operators across the country to explain the use and importance of the machines, while sensitisation and technical support will continue throughout the nationwide rollout.

The Authority has urged all GST-registered businesses to use the machines appropriately and issue valid GST receipts for taxable transactions.

The NRA further reminded businesses of their obligation to issue GST receipts and called on consumers to play their part by requesting receipts for taxable purchases.

The nationwide rollout forms part of the NRA’s broader efforts to modernise tax administration, improve compliance and ensure that taxable transactions are properly recorded, thereby strengthening domestic revenue mobilisation in Sierra Leone.
