Opposition Leader in Parliament Hon. Abdul Kargbo has threatened a boycott of parliamentary proceedings if opposition party executives are denied access to the Well of Parliament.

In a statement, Kargbo said he had informed police officers who were allegedly preventing opposition party executives from entering the parliamentary chamber while allowing executives of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) access that opposition lawmakers would not enter the Well if their stakeholders were barred.

“I have informed the police officers preventing our party executives from entering the Well of Parliament, while allowing SLPP executives access, that if our stakeholders are denied entry, not a single opposition MP will enter the Well,” Kargbo stated.

The warning comes ahead of a crucial parliamentary vote on proposed constitutional amendments relating to Sierra Leone’s electoral system.

Among the issues under consideration is whether the country should adopt a proportional representation system or retain the First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) electoral system.

Kargbo’s statement comes amid heightened political tensions between the ruling and opposition parties as lawmakers prepare to deliberate on proposed reforms that could have significant implications for Sierra Leone’s electoral framework.

The alleged disagreement over access to the parliamentary chamber could further intensify the political atmosphere ahead of the vote, with attention now focused on whether opposition lawmakers will participate in the proceedings.

Parliament is expected to proceed with today’s constitutional amendment proceedings as lawmakers consider the proposed changes.
