Sierra Leone Parliament has commenced debate on the Constitutional Amendments Bill 2025, while the government prepares to broaden nationwide consultations on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), the Ministry of Information and Civic Education has announced.
Addressing journalists during the Government’s Weekly Press Conference in Freetown, Strategic Communications Adviser Mohamed Jaward Nyallay said the proposed constitutional amendments are intended to strengthen Sierra Leone’s electoral processes and promote wider democratic governance and economic development.
On the issue of FGM, Mr Nyallay disclosed that the Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice has completed the initial investigative and consultative phase in Makeni, Bo and Freetown.
He stated that the next phase will extend consultations to civil society organisations, traditional authorities and community groups in order to ensure broader national participation in the ongoing review process.
The Government says the expanded engagement is aimed at gathering diverse perspectives before any further policy or legislative decisions are considered.
