The Sierra Leone Police has visited the family of a woman reportedly killed during violent clashes linked to a football match in the Kroo Town Road area of Freetown.
The incident occurred on Sunday, September 13, 2026, following tensions between supporters of Kroo Town Road Football Club and Kossoh Town Football Club after a match between the two sides.
Reports said the unrest later spread toward Wellington Street, off Siaka Stevens Street, where an office associated with APC flagbearer aspirant Sheik Alhaji Mohamed Kamara, popularly known as Jagaban, was reportedly targeted.
The circumstances surrounding the reported shooting remain under investigation. The Independent Police Complaints Board said it had opened an investigation into the alleged shooting, following reports that three unidentified people were killed and others injured.
A separate account identified a woman as a reported victim of an alleged stray bullet during the confrontation. Police have said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
During their visit, police officers expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and presented five bags of rice and Le30,000 as a gesture of support.
The officers encouraged the family to remain strong during the period of mourning and appealed for calm as authorities continue efforts to establish what happened.
The visit comes amid broader concerns over the escalation of football-related tensions into violence. The Western Area Football Association has indefinitely suspended the COFA League following the unrest and called for investigations into the violence.
The Independent Police Complaints Board said its investigation is being conducted under the IPCB Regulations, 2013, which provide for investigations into shooting incidents involving police officers and alleged injuries, assaults or wounding caused by police officers.
Authorities have not yet publicly established the full sequence of events leading to the reported deaths.
