The police in the northern city of Makeni are investigating the death of Sonia Mary Thomas, a second-year female student domiciled at the Fatima Campus Female Hostels at the University of Makeni on September 6, 2021.

Four students are helping the police with the investigation, according to police sources.

According to preliminary statements obtained from the suspects, they said the incident happened following a quarrel that ensued between the deceased and other female students at around 19:00 GMT at the Fatima Campus Hostels.

Premier News reports that the deceased was said to have had a cardiac problem which caused her to lose consciousness whenever she gets angry, according to people close to her.

When she lost consciousness, it was reported to the Fatima Campus Matron, who then informed the Vice Chancellor, the University said in a statement. “The Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Professor Joseph Alimamy Turay instantly rushed to the scene and conveyed Miss Sonia Mary Thomas (now deceased) to the Holy Spirit Catholic Hospital at Masuba in Makeni. It was at the said hospital that Sonia was pronounce dead. As a university, frantic efforts were made to report the issue to the Mena Hills Regional Police Station in Makeni the same night of the incident,” the University Administration said in a statement.

The remains of the deceased has been conveyed to Freetown for postmortem.
