The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) has commissioned a new ultra-modern mental health facility at the 5 Infantry Brigade in Gondama, Bo District, to expand access to mental health services for military personnel and communities in the Southern Region.
The facility was commissioned by the RSLAF Surgeon General, Brigadier General Dr. Stephen Sivalie, with support from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Equipped with tele-health services, an ICT hub and solar power, the facility is designed to strengthen the delivery of mental health care while improving access to reliable services for personnel and residents in the region.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, 5 Infantry Brigade Commander, Brigadier General A.O. Kamara, described mental health as a significant challenge in Sierra Leone and highlighted drug abuse among young people as a growing concern linked to mental health challenges.
The new facility is expected to provide dedicated mental health services to members of the Armed Forces while extending care to residents in surrounding communities.
The commissioning marks an expansion of mental health infrastructure in the Southern Region and strengthens efforts to provide accessible and sustainable mental health support to military personnel and the wider population.
