MBSSE Reports Significant Increase in School Enrollment Under FQSE
Osman Tolo Sesay The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), Conrad Sackey, has reported a significant rise in school enrollment under Sierra Leone’s Free Quality School Education (FQSE) programme.
The number of children enrolled has increased to 3.1 million, up from 1.8 million before the initiative.
The update was shared on Tuesday during an event marking the 7th anniversary of the FQSE programme at the Brookfields Hotel in Freetown. Minister Sackey said the growth in enrollment demonstrates the programme’s role in reducing barriers to education across the country.
The FQSE initiative, launched in 2018 by the government of President Julius Maada Bio, aims to ease the financial burden of education by covering tuition fees, public examination costs, and providing teaching and learning materials. The programme also includes a nationwide school feeding component.

According to the MBSSE, these measures are intended to improve access to education and enhance learning outcomes. Officials say the programme is part of broader efforts to equip young people with knowledge and skills to participate effectively in Sierra Leone’s development and compete in a global economy.
