MP Dismisses Claims Linking Feed Salone to Falling Rice Prices
Member of Parliament for Port Loko District, Hon. Aminata Sesay, has dismissed claims that the government’s “Feed Salone” initiative is responsible for the recent drop in rice prices across Sierra Leone.
Speaking during a parliamentary discussion on food security and market stability, Hon. Sesay argued that the current reduction in rice prices is driven by market dynamics rather than government intervention.
“The decline in rice prices is due to increased supply and demand in the market, not because of the Feed Salone program,” she stated. “If the initiative was truly effective, we would see locally produced parboiled rice widely available in our markets.”
The lawmaker further questioned the visible impact of the government’s flagship agricultural program, noting that many citizens have yet to experience tangible benefits. She described the initiative as unsuccessful, calling for a more transparent assessment of its progress and implementation.
Hon. Sesay’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about the effectiveness of the Feed Salone program, which was launched to boost local food production and reduce the country’s dependence on imported rice.
While government officials have maintained that the initiative is making gradual progress, critics argue that the impact remains limited on the ground.
