Sierra Leone’s Energy Transition and Green Growth Plan Highlighted at Chatham House
Kadijatu Barrie Dr. Morie Komba Manyeh, Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, highlighted the country’s ambitious energy transition and green growth plan at the Africa’s Energy Transition event held at Chatham House in London.
During his address, Dr. Manyeh outlined Sierra Leone’s goal of achieving 100% electrification by 2040, emphasizing a strong focus on renewable energy sources such as hydropower and solar photovoltaics. He acknowledged the longstanding energy challenges faced by the country while stressing the importance of a comprehensive strategy that extends beyond infrastructure.
“Our approach incorporates community involvement in environmental decision-making and climate change education to ensure a sustainable transition,” Dr. Manyeh stated. He explained that Sierra Leone’s National Climate Action Plans align with the Paris Agreement, prioritizing renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience.
Dr. Manyeh also referenced efforts in regional energy integration, highlighting the West African Power Pool (WAPP) and the Côte d’Ivoire-Liberia-Sierra Leone-Guinea (CLSG) Interconnection Project. These initiatives facilitate cross-border electricity exchanges, enhancing energy security across West Africa.
To attract private investment and improve governance, Dr. Manyeh noted ongoing reforms in Sierra Leone’s energy sector, including strengthening key institutions such as the Electricity and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC), the Electricity Generation and Transmission Company (EGTC), and the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA).
Further reinforcing these efforts, President Bio appointed Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, former Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), as Chair of the Energy Governance Coordination Group (EGCG). Dr. Yumkella is tasked with overseeing energy policy reforms, supporting technical operations, and driving investment in the sector.
Concluding his address, Dr. Manyeh revealed that Sierra Leone’s energy sector is undergoing significant transformation, presenting promising investment opportunities, particularly in renewable sources like hydropower and solar energy. He urged African policymakers, investors, researchers, and the international community to collaborate in transforming Africa’s energy landscape for future generations.
