Sierra Leone, France Deepen Ties on Gender Equality, Child Protection at UNGA81 in New York
Sierra Leone’s Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr. Isata Mahoi, has held bilateral talks with France’s Ambassador for Human Rights and former Minister Delegate for Gender Equality, Diversity and Equal Opportunities, Isabelle Rome, to strengthen cooperation on gender equality, women’s empowerment and the protection of children’s rights.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between Sierra Leone and France in addressing issues affecting women and children, including child marriage and other harmful practices against women and girls.
Minister Mahoi and Ambassador Rome also discussed opportunities to strengthen women’s empowerment and leadership, as well as the development of exchange programmes and knowledge-sharing initiatives between the two countries.
The engagement highlighted the importance of sustained international partnerships and policy dialogue in supporting Sierra Leone’s efforts to protect girls from child marriage and expand opportunities for women and girls to participate in social, economic and political development.
Minister Mahoi’s engagement with the French delegation forms part of Sierra Leone’s efforts to strengthen bilateral and multilateral partnerships in advancing gender equality and protecting children’s rights.
The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs said such partnerships are intended to translate international commitments into practical action while promoting women’s empowerment and the protection of children.
The Ministry is also seeking opportunities for international exchanges, knowledge-sharing and innovative partnerships that can support long-term progress in addressing gender inequality, harmful practices and challenges affecting women and children in Sierra Leone.
