Sierra Leone has officially handed over the chairmanship of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC) to Senegal, following the transition in the leadership of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
The handover ceremony took place on Thursday at the Sierra Leone High Commission in Abuja, where Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner, Julius F. Sandy, formally transferred the chairmanship to Senegal’s Permanent Representative to ECOWAS, Ambassador Nicolas Auguste Nyouky. The event was attended by Permanent Representatives of ECOWAS Member States, senior officials of the ECOWAS Commission, and staff of the High Commission.
The transition follows the election of Senegal’s President, H.E. Bassirou Diomaye Faye, as Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government during the 69th Ordinary Summit, succeeding Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio.
In line with ECOWAS practice, the Permanent Representative of the Member State holding the Chairmanship of the Authority automatically assumes leadership of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee.
In his farewell remarks, Ambassador Sandy thanked his colleagues for their cooperation and support throughout Sierra Leone’s tenure as Chair of the Committee. He reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to the ideals of ECOWAS and pledged his full support to the incoming Chair.
Taking over the role, Ambassador Nyouky pledged to lead the Committee through dialogue, consultation, and institutional continuity while commending Ambassador Sandy for his leadership and the staff of the Sierra Leone High Commission for their dedication and support.
As the new Chair of the PRC, Ambassador Nyouky will preside over the Committee’s monthly sessions, oversee its advisory role to the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, and co-chair the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council at the ambassadorial level.
