Sierra Leone Leverages Strategic Partnership with Germany to Drive National Growth and Economic Transformation
Sierra Leone has reaffirmed its strategic partnership with Germany and the European Union, utilising the platform of Germany’s 36th Reunification Anniversary to advance key national priorities in energy security, infrastructure, trade, and institutional reform.
Speaking at the commemoration event, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, extended congratulations to the German government on behalf of President Julius Maada Bio and the people of Sierra Leone. Highlighting the lessons of national unity and constitutional governance from Germany’s history, Minister Swaray stressed Sierra Leone’s commitment to turning strong diplomatic ties into tangible economic opportunities for its citizens.
Minister Swaray emphasised that Germany’s experience offers valuable lessons on national unity, constitutional governance, and peaceful political engagement. He reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation with Germany and the European Union in support of sustainable development and economic transformation.
The German Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Dr Pascal Richter, highlighted the growing partnership, citing renewed commitments covering energy, critical infrastructure, critical minerals, and feeder roads. He said discussions held in October had generated fresh pledges intended to support national development priorities, improve the business environment, and attract responsible investment.
The Ambassador highlighted preparations involving EuroCham Freetown, an initiative designed to strengthen engagement among businesses, investors, and economic institutions, thereby creating opportunities for commercial partnerships and investment.
Sierra Leone also welcomed Siemens Energy’s commitment to the long-term operation and maintenance of the project. The government said the company’s continued local presence could facilitate technical skills transfer, create employment opportunities, and strengthen domestic capacity within the energy sector. It further acknowledged the contributions of the United States International Development Finance Corporation and other international partners towards the project’s financing and technical development.

Ambassador Richter underscored the importance of reliable electricity, effective legislation, and strong institutions in creating an enabling environment for investment and sustainable economic growth. The EU also welcomed progress surrounding the canal project, expressing optimism about its anticipated opening around the end of this year or early next year.
The Sierra Leone government also welcomed a high-level delegation from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, GIZ and KfW, led by Karin Flachsbarth.
