The Board of Directors of the Sierra Leone Bar Association (“SLBA”) has issued a general notice convening an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) following police interference that derailed its scheduled Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The notice, dated 1st August 2026 and signed by SLBA General Secretary Alfred Paul Juwah, Esq., expressed appreciation to members for their patience and reaffirmed the leadership’s commitment to constitutional governance and transparency.
According to the statement, the Board had originally convened the AGM for July 31 and August 1, 2026, to deliberate on association affairs, receive reports, and elect a new Board of Directors. However, proceedings were halted following an intervention and disruption by the Sierra Leone Police.
In response to the disruption, the Board decided to convene an EGM to address pressing governance issues and ensure decisions are taken in accordance with the association’s Memorandum and Articles of Association as well as national laws.
The upcoming EGM will focus on addressing the governance transition ahead of the current leadership’s mandate expiration: The tenure of the current Board of Directors is set to elapse on 18th August 2026, marking the end of a three-month extended period. The Board clarified that it will not continue exercising power past this mandate without direct authorisation from the membership.
The Board plans to present a resolution for members to appoint an independent Caretaker Body. The current leadership will step aside on or before August 18, 2026, handing over administrative authority to the newly appointed Caretaker Body.
Mandate of the Proposed Caretaker Body: If approved by the membership, the Caretaker Body will be assigned key responsibilities: Manage the day-to-day affairs of the Sierra Leone Bar Association; preserve all assets and official records of the association; prepare and organise necessary arrangements for the upcoming AGM and elections; and convene and conduct the AGM and elections within a period determined by members at the EGM.
The Board urged all SLBA members to attend the meeting, emphasising that the resolutions will be vital to safeguarding the constitutional governance, independence, and operational continuity of the association.
In a closing remark, the President and the executive team expressed gratitude to the membership for the opportunity to serve.
