The Directors of the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) have announced the postponement of the Association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), originally scheduled for Friday, July 31, and Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the Freetown International Conference Centre in Aberdeen.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Directors said the decision was taken “regrettably” following what they described as unlawful interference by the Sierra Leone Police, who allegedly prevented members from accessing the AGM venue without lawful justification.
The SLBA leadership condemned the police action in strong terms, describing it as unconstitutional and a blatant abuse of statutory powers, particularly in the absence of any court order authorising such intervention.
According to the Directors, the incident has resulted in significant financial losses to the Association, with costs conservatively estimated at millions of Leones-expenses they say could have been avoided if reasonable measures had been taken.
The Association further reaffirmed that the management of its affairs remains the responsibility of its Directors, as stipulated under Article 19 of its Articles of Association. It reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law, holding the Government accountable, and safeguarding the welfare of its members.
The SLBA also extended a formal apology to its members and guests for the inconvenience caused by the unexpected postponement.
A new date for the AGM is yet to be announced.
