President Bio Never Sought Second ECOWAS Term – SLPP PRO Moses Mambu
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) and National Publicity Secretary of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Moses Mambu, has clarified that President Julius Maada Bio was not seeking a second term as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.
Mambu made the statement during a live television interview on AYV Wake Up Sierra Leone, while speaking on issues around the just-concluded ECOWAS summit.
“President Julius Maada Bio was not seeking a second term as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS),” Mambu stated.
Mambu’s clarification comes amid ongoing public discussion and social media debate following the recent election of a new ECOWAS Chairman at the Authority of Heads of State and Government summit.
President Bio served as ECOWAS Chairman and handed over the role to Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye during the bloc’s 69th Ordinary Session held in Lungi.
Mambu’s comments appear aimed at addressing speculation over whether President Bio had lobbied to retain the regional position.
ECOWAS leadership is rotational and determined by consensus among Heads of State and Government of the 15-member bloc.
