Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA), James Bagie Bio, has reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to reducing road traffic deaths and injuries after joining 162 United Nations Member States in adopting a landmark global road safety resolution at the United Nations General Assembly.
The resolution, titled “Political Declaration of the High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety,” was overwhelmingly adopted, with only one country voting against it and no abstentions.
It commits participating countries to intensifying efforts to halve road traffic deaths and serious injuries worldwide by 2030, in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.6 and the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030.
Addressing the Assembly, James Bio reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s determination to strengthen road safety through effective implementation of national laws, policies and strategies aimed at protecting all road users. He said the country remains committed to advancing safer transport systems and improving road safety outcomes in collaboration with the international community.
He also acknowledged the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio, noting that the government continues to prioritise policies and initiatives designed to enhance road safety and reduce preventable road crashes across the country.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” James Bio said. “Sierra Leone is unwavering in its commitment to halving road traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030 and beyond. Together, let us honour the promise of safer roads, safer vehicles, and safer road users for today and future generations.”
The political declaration urges governments to strengthen road safety education, improve accountability in the planning and delivery of road infrastructure projects, and ensure that transport development complies with internationally recognised safety standards. It also highlights the importance of public awareness and health literacy in preventing road traffic crashes and saving lives.
James Bio’s participation in the high-level meeting reflects Sierra Leone’s continued engagement in global efforts to improve road safety and reinforces the country’s commitment to supporting international initiatives aimed at making roads safer for all.
