Babatunde Ahonsi, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sierra Leone, has expressed both willingness and deep concern regarding Sierra Leone’s election to the United Nations Security Council.

He emphasized that the UN will offer the country the essential support it needs to become an influential member of the council.

He made this statement as his commitment during the organised celebration by the office of the first lady, Fatima Bio on the 12th of June 2023 to celebrate the country’s victory.

Thus, he reaffirmed his commitment on behalf of the United Nations to supporting the country at all times;

“UN Sierra Leone and the development partners are open to supporting Sierra Leone to be value-adding and impactful member of the UN Security Council, 2024-25” he stated adding that, it’s part of his commitment to the country at a cocktail in honour of the landmark achievement.

The President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio who also spoke at the event recalled how Sierra Leone got elected on Tuesday June 6th 2023, by an overwhelming majority, to serve a two-year period as a Non-Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council.
