UNDP Kicks Off Solar Light Installation for 2,183 Rural Households in Sierra Leone
Sia Lucy Kannah The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has begun installing solar lighting systems for 2,183 rural households across Sierra Leone, including in Falaba, Kambia, Moyamba, Pujehun, Bonthe, and the Western Area.
Access to clean and renewable energy is a key driver of development, improving healthcare, education, food security, and livelihoods. However, many communities in Sierra Leone—particularly women in rural and underserved areas—still face significant challenges in obtaining reliable energy.
Women are disproportionately affected by energy poverty, which limits opportunities and negatively impacts health and well-being.
To address these challenges, UNDP, in collaboration with the Government of Sierra Leone (Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, Statistics Sierra Leone, and the Ministry of Energy), conducted a Gender Gaps in Energy Access Assessment to better understand the country’s energy needs and gender dynamics.
This initiative aligns with Sierra Leone’s national priorities on sustainable energy and gender equality, aiming to shape inclusive policies, promote women’s leadership in the energy sector, and ensure no one is left behind.
Each household will receive a 12W solar system equipped with lights and a mobile charging port, providing reliable lighting, enhanced safety, and improved connectivity. Installations have already begun in Tombo.
