The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) received a donation of 10 Honda motorbikes from UNICEF on July 31, 2026, in Sierra Leone to support the implementation of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Programme and strengthen school supervision nationwide. The intervention targets Quality Assurance Officers, whose ability to monitor schools and provide technical support has been constrained, particularly in hard-to-reach communities.

Education Minister Conrad Sackey described the donation as a strategic boost to the ministry’s oversight capacity, noting that improved mobility will enable more efficient inspections, better engagement with teachers, and stronger adherence to quality standards across the education system. The initiative is designed to address persistent access challenges that have limited effective field monitoring and timely support to schools.

UNICEF’s GPE Coordinator, Chelsea Lavalee, said the milestone follows nearly two years of collaboration focused on strengthening systems for school visits and data collection. She emphasised the need for accountability in the use of the motorbikes, urging officers to deploy them strictly for official duties aimed at improving supervision and learning outcomes.

Quality Assurance Officers welcomed the support and committed to using the motorbikes responsibly to enhance their field operations. The donation forms part of a broader partnership between UNICEF and the Government of Sierra Leone to advance inclusive, equitable, and quality education, building on similar interventions in other sectors, including recent support to the Ministry of Health to improve monitoring and service delivery.
